The Story of the Netherlands East Indies

'The story of the Netherlands East Indies' is the first national general exhibition in the Netherlands about the history of the Netherlands East Indies from 1596 onwards. Focus is on the Japanese occupation, the declaration of independence of the Republic of Indonesia, the Bersiap period and the decolonization of Indonesia. The prolonged period of war and struggle for independence had adverse effects for the Indies community. From the end of 1945 until the mid-seventies a large exodus took place to the mother country. Here the Indies people had to build up a new life.

'The Story of the Netherlands East Indies' is a co-production of the Indies Commemoration Centre and Bronbeek Museum and you can visit the exhibition at Bronbeek Museum in Arnhem. Please, consult the website www.hetverhaalvanindie.com for more information. For those people who aren’t able to visit the museum the Indies Commemoration Centre has developed a Dutch and English digital tour. Here you can visit the exhibition online, completely with all the texts, images, audio and video.
